Here is a simple DIY test to determine if the fuel pump in your RV generator is working properly. If your Onan RV generator does not start or suddenly stops after about 20 minutes, your fuel pump could be failing. I had this exact problem and had to replace the fuel pump and filter. Save yourself a costly repair and replace the fuel pump yourself.
Replacing your generator fuel pump and filter is a DIY project that you can perform. You’ll need a few basic tools and little patience. I’m not a mechanic but replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter on my generator without any real trouble. I’ll show you how I did it and tell you what tools you’ll need.

Performing regular oil changes on RV generator is important for keeping your generator functioning properly. You should change the oil at least once a year as recommended. Also, be sure to run your generator for at least an hour every month. While exercising your generator, turn on a few electrical components so that it has an electrical load on it.
I have an Onan MicroQuiet 4000 generator which does NOT have an oil filter. For other models, be sure to reference your owners manual for proper procedures and instructions.
